L’👁️de Giulia : Winter Olympic Games in Milan [ENG] [IT]
The opening ceremony of the XXV Winter Olympic Games was held on 6 February 2026 mainly at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, with the participation of three other cities in the region.
I am an Italian volunteer of the European Solidarity Corps at Maison de l’Europe for ten months and I watched the ceremony from here, Nantes, even though the Winter Olimpic Games took place in my hometown, Milan. To be honest I have never followed the Olympics, but this time, since I’m far from home, I heard the stories of my family that was living the environment brought by this event. Here is what the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Milan meant to me, giving you, my perspective.
As outlined in the Olympic Charter, the programme included an artistic component dedicated to showcasing the culture of the host city and country, culminating in the traditional parade of athletes and the lighting of the Olympic cauldrons.
With a total duration of three hours and twenty-nine minutes, it turned out to be the longest ceremony in the history of the Winter Olympics. The theme of the ceremony was “Harmony”, a term derived from ancient Greek and indicates ‘bringing together’ different elements into a coherent whole. In my opinion, the possibility that the ceremony might appear as a mix of elements was likely, but despite the long duration of the event, the ceremony was spectacular.
The Games were officially declared open by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, who is the representative and guarantor of the Italian Constitution; the ceremony opened with a peace video message from the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
The actual show then began with a segment inspired by Italian art, particularly Antonio Canova, telling the story of Love and Psyche. The actress Matilda De Angelis symbolically conducted composers Giacomo Puccini, Gioachino Rossini and Giuseppe Verdi, and above the stadium appeared three suspended paint tubes of blue, red and yellow, releasing their colours as the dancers performed, symbolising creativity and artistic expression. It was then followed by a performance by American singer Mariah Carey, who sang Domenico Modugno’s “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” in Italian, but she didn’t memorised the lyrics and therefore she was performing while reading the words scrolling on a screen in front of her, which were not even written in Italian but designed to assist with her pronunciation.
Subsequently, some models walked the runway wearing outfits in the colours of the Italian flag, designed by Giorgio Armani and Laura Pausini performed “Il Canto degli Italiani”. About this fashion show, some ladies who attended the “European – Italian Café”, held in the same week as the ceremony, shared their admiration for the elegance and beauty of the moment and I fully agree.
The Olympic rings were unveiled during a segment dedicated to the “harmony” between the city of Milan and the mountains of Cortina d’Ampezzo, symbolising the two host locations of the Games. Furthermore, actor Pierfrancesco Favino recited Giacomo Leopardi’s poem “L’infinito”, musically accompanied by Giovanni Andrea Zanon, who played the 1716 Stradivari violin “Berthier”.
This was followed by the parade of nations, traditionally opened by Greece and concluded by the host country, preceded by the countries that will host the next Olympic Games (France and the United States of America). Athletes from 93 countries paraded in four venues: Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno and Predazzo. The public welcomed the Ukrainian team with a standing ovation, while booing the Israeli delegation and US Vice President J. D. Vance. Before the official speeches by the President of the International Olympic Committee and the President of the Organising Committee, actress and comedian Brenda Lodigiani presented a segment dedicated to gestures of Italian tradition. In this sketch, my German housemates started asking me the meanings of the gestures and we began a debate about their ‘functionality’.
After the video presentation of the Olympic torch relay, the torch containing the Olympic flame was brought inside the San Siro stadium while tenor Andrea Bocelli performed “Nessun dorma”. A segment dedicated to promoting peace featured the participation of United Nations Messenger of Peace Charlize Theron and Italian rapper Ghali, who recited Gianni Rodari’s poem Promemoria.
Before the lighting of the braziers, a tribute to the European Union was presented accompanied by its anthem. The ceremony culminated in the finale of the Olympic torch relay and concluded with a fireworks display over Milan. As already mentioned, I believe I appreciated the event even more precisely because I was far from home; seeing how Italian culture can be represented at an European and international level in all its facets gave me goosebumps. Recognising famous Italian artists and personalities made me feel proud of my nation and city and seeing how sport can bring people together and promote peace.
La cerimonia di apertura dei XXV Giochi Olimpici Invernali si è tenuta il 6 febbraio 2026 principalmente presso lo stadio Giuseppe Meazza di Milano, con la compartecipazione di altre tre città nella regione.
Sono volontaria del Corpo Europeo di Solidarietà a Maison de l’Europe per dieci mesi e ho seguito da qui, a Nantes, la cerimonia che si è svolta nella mia città natale; se devo essere sincera non ho mai seguito le olimpiadi, ma questa volta è diverso perché si svolgevano a casa. Per questo vorrei raccontarvi e magari spiegarvi cosa, la cerimonia di apertura dei giochi olimpici di a Milano, é stata per me donandovi il mio punto di vista.
Come previsto dalla Carta Olimpica, il programma ha incluso una componente artistica dedicata alla valorizzazione della cultura della città e del Paese ospitante, culminando nella tradizionale sfilata degli atleti e nell’accensione dei bracieri olimpici.
Con una durata complessiva di tre ore e ventinove minuti, è risultata la cerimonia più lunga nella storia delle Olimpiadi Invernali. Il tema della cerimonia era “Armonia”, termine deriva dal greco antico e, in ambito musicale, indica il “mettere insieme” elementi diversi in un insieme coerente. A mio avviso la possibilità che la cerimonia sembrasse un miscuglio di elementi era probabile, ma nonostante la lunga durata dell’evento la cerimonia è risultata spettacolare.
I Giochi sono stati ufficialmente dichiarati aperti dal Presidente della Repubblica Italiana, Sergio Mattarella, ovvero il rappresentante e garante della Costituzione italiana; la cerimonia si è aperta con con un videomessaggio di pace del Segretario generale delle Nazioni Unite António Guterres.
Di seguito é inziato lo spettacolo vero e proprio con un segmento ispirato all’arte italiana, su tutti Antonio Canova, raccontando la storia di Amore e Psiche. L’attrice Matilda De Angelis ha diretto simbolicamente i compositori Giacomo Puccini, Gioachino Rossini e Giuseppe Verdi e sopra lo stadio apparvero tre tubi sospesi di vernice blu, rossa e gialla che rilasciavano i loro colori mentre i ballerini si esibivano, a simboleggiare la creatività e l’espressione artistica.
Si è poi esibita la cantante statunitense Mariah Carey, che ha interpretato in italiano “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” di Domenico Modugno, che non aveva imparato il testo a memoria e dunque si esibiva leggendo il testo che scorreva sullo schermo davanti a lei che non era scritto in italiano, ma in modo di aiutarla con la pronuncia.
In seguito, alcune modelle sfilarono con abiti nei colori della bandiera italiana, disegnati da Giorgio Armani e Laura Pausini eseguì “Il Canto degli Italiani”. Di questa sfilata alcune signore che hanno parteciato al “caffé europeo – italiano”, che si é tenuto al stessa settimana della cerimonia, hanno condiviso la loro ammirazione verso l’eleganza e bellezza del momento.
Gli anelli olimpici furono svelati durante un segmento dedicato all’“armonia” tra la città di Milano e le montagne di Cortina d’Ampezzo, simbolo delle due sedi ospitanti dei Giochi. Inoltre, l’attore Pierfrancesco Favino recitò “L’infinito” di Giacomo Leopardi accompagnato musicalmente da Giovanni Andrea Zanon, che suonò il violino Stradivari “Berthier” del 1716.
A seguire ebbe inizio la sfilata delle nazioni, aperta come di consuetudine dalla Grecia e conclusa dal paese ospitante, l’Italia, preceduta dai paesi che ospiteranno i prossimi giochi olimpici (Francia e Stati Uniti d’America). Gli atleti dei 93 paesi sono sfilati in quattro sedi: Milano, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livigno e Predazzo. Il pubblico ha accolto la squadra dell’Ucraina con un’ovazione, mentre ha riservato fischi alla delegazione di Israele e al vicepresidente statunitense J. D. Vance.
Prima dei discorsi ufficiali della presidente del Comitato Olimpico Internazionale e del presidente del comitato organizzatore, l’attrice e comica Brenda Lodigiani presentò un momento dedicato ai gesti della tradizione italiana. In questo sketch, le mie coinquiline tedesche hanno inziato a chiedermi i significati dei gesti e abbiamo iniziato un dibattito sulla loro “funzionalità”.
Dopo la presentazione video della staffetta della torcia olimpica, la torcia contenente la fiamma olimpica è stata portata all’interno dello stadio di San Siro, mentre il tenore Andrea Bocelli interpretava “Nessun dorma”.
Un segmento dedicato alla promozione della pace vide la partecipazione della Messaggera di Pace delle Nazioni Unite Charlize Theron e del rapper italiano Ghali che ha recitato la poesia Promemoria di Gianni Rodari.
Prima dell’accensione dei bracieri, venne presentato un omaggio all’Unione europea accompagnato dal suo inno. La cerimonia culminò nell’epilogo della staffetta della torcia olimpica e il tutto si concluse con uno spettacolo pirotecnico su Milano.
Come già ribadito, credo di aver apprezzato ancora di più l’evento proprio perché lontana da casa, vedere come la cultura italiana possa essere rappresentata a livello europeo e internazionale in tutte le sue sfaccettature mi ha fatto venire i brividi. Riconoscere gli artisti e personaggi italiani famosi mi ha fatto sentire orgogliosa della mia nazione e città, ma anche vedere come lo sport possa riunire e incitare alla pace.
